To tackle long-standing parking challenges around the iconic Charminar in Hyderabad, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has announced the development of a state-of-the-art multi-level parking (MLP) facility under a public-private partnership (PPP) model.

The project, spanning 3,500 square metres, will accommodate approximately 145–150 cars and 150 two-wheelers. In addition to easing congestion, the complex will include a dedicated hawker zone and commercial spaces, blending heritage with modern convenience.

Charminar, a major tourist attraction, has faced mounting infrastructure pressure with inadequate parking and narrow approach roads leading to frequent traffic bottlenecks. The proposed MLP aims to streamline the area’s traffic while enhancing safety and visitor experience. Advanced features like automated parking systems, digital display boards, and cashless payment kiosks will be integrated to ensure efficiency.

The MLP will also focus on sustainability. A rooftop garden and eco-conscious design elements will be incorporated to improve air quality and visual appeal in the densely populated old city. The project will align with GHMC’s commitment to green urban infrastructure and reduce the environmental impact of increased traffic.

In addition to technology-driven solutions, the MLP will feature CCTV surveillance, fire safety systems, and clearly marked emergency exits to enhance security and accessibility. The inclusion of a hawker zone will provide safe, regulated spaces for vendors, improving orderliness and promoting local enterprise.

Officials believe the MLP will revitalise the Charminar area by decluttering roads, improving pedestrian access, and supporting local businesses. The commercial component is expected to cater to the high footfall of visitors, especially during festivals and weekends.

The GHMC has already invited Expressions of Interest (EOIs) from qualified private firms to execute the project. The tendering process is underway, and construction is expected to proceed in phases, minimising disruption to daily life.

This initiative is part of Hyderabad’s broader urban development strategy to integrate heritage conservation with modern infrastructure. As the city grows, projects like the Charminar MLP are critical to enhancing liveability, mobility, and sustainable development.
