With the northeast monsoon approaching, the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has launched a Rs 1.45 billion project to redevelop Narayanapuram Lake in Perungudi, aiming to strengthen the bund and create public access around the waterbody.

The works include construction of a toe wall along the bund, stone pitching to prevent erosion, reinforced embankments, and an additional retaining wall with handrails. A block-paved walking path will circle the lake, complemented by entrance plazas, gates, and lighting poles.

Greenery measures include planting trees and Vetiver grass, which helps stabilise soil, as well as dense plantations and hedges along adjoining roads. Plans also feature habitat islands within the lake to enhance biodiversity.

New pathways will connect Pallavaram–Thoraipakkam Radial Road, Sunnambu Kolathur Main Road, and Erikkarai Salai, replacing eroded bunds and broken edges with walkable spaces. The project is scheduled for completion within six months of handover.

A civic official said the upgraded lake would balance both monsoon inflows and community use, offering resilience and recreation.
