The Greater Chennai Corporation is planning to install electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in several key neighbourhoods including Anna Nagar, T. Nagar, Nungambakkam, Adyar and Besant Nagar to strengthen the city's charging infrastructure. The scheme is intended to improve access to charging for commuters and reduce barriers for those considering EV ownership.

Each selected location will have two charging points so motorists can charge while using nearby parking facilities and thus limit the need to seek distant chargers. Officials said the initiative aims to support the growing number of EV users in Chennai including private vehicle owners and drivers in app-based taxi, logistics and delivery services. Ward 104 councillor T.V. Shemmozhi had earlier highlighted difficulties faced by users in finding charging facilities and the mayor announced plans to set up charging stations at more than 15 locations across the city.

The charging stations will be developed along with parking spaces under a revamped Smart Parking Management System through a public-private partnership to leverage private investment and operational expertise. This integrated approach is expected to streamline parking and power supply arrangements and to provide predictable charging access in dense neighbourhoods. Work on the project is expected to begin by the end of the year as part of Chennai's broader efforts to promote cleaner transportation and reduce urban emissions.

Officials indicated that the facilities will be monitored and expanded in phases to match demand and that the initial sites have been chosen to maximise convenience and usage patterns. If delivered as proposed the network could reduce range anxiety for owners and support faster adoption of EVs in the metropolitan area. The corporation will continue planning to identify further locations and to ensure that installation is coordinated with parking management and local traffic needs.
