Chennai to Get EV Chargers at 15 Public Spots

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) will install electric vehicle charging stations at 15 locations across the city, responding to the growing demand from EV users.

Acting on a request from the Tamil Nadu Green Energy Corporation Limited, the civic body identified government-owned vacant land across beaches, parks, lakes, gardens, and playgrounds in all fifteen zones for the installation.

Key sites include the National Art Gallery near Egmore, Magaral Park in Ambattur, Chetpet Eco Park and Bougainvilla Park in Anna Nagar, and Semmozhi Park and Nageswara Rao Park in Teynampet. Additional stations will be located at Shri Ashtalakshmi Temple parking and public lots at Marina Beach, Thiruvanmaiyur Beach, and Besant Nagar. Two sites in Kodambakkam zone—Somasudharam Ground and a Corporation playground—have also been earmarked.

At a council meeting, a councillor suggested free charging for low-income users. However, Mayor Priya clarified that while the project is moving ahead, free public charging is not currently planned.
