Chennai Metro Rail and Metro Limited (CMAML) has engaged a consultancy to undertake feasibility studies for new transport systems in Kodaikanal and Mamallapuram. The contract covers preliminary technical, operational and financial assessments to determine viable models for passenger mobility in the two towns. The move forms part of a broader effort to enhance regional connectivity and to evaluate sustainable options that respect local ecology and cultural heritage. The studies will also examine integration with existing networks.

Consultancy teams are expected to map route options, to assess engineering challenges posed by hilly terrain in Kodaikanal and coastal constraints in Mamallapuram, and to propose suitable technologies and station locations. Environmental impact analysis and heritage conservation considerations will be central to the review given the sensitive nature of both destinations. The assessment will include ridership estimation, service planning and preliminary cost estimates to inform decision making.

The process will draw on demographic data, tourism trends and transport modelling to forecast demand and to test scenarios for peak and off peak movements. Stakeholder consultations are likely to involve local authorities, tourism bodies and community representatives to capture ground level concerns and priorities. The consultancy is to prepare a phased implementation roadmap that balances technical feasibility, funding strategies and timelines.

Officials indicated that findings will inform future project approvals and may shape investment plans for multi modal solutions tailored to seasonal variations in visitor numbers.
