Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has signed an agreement to appoint a project management company to enhance the operational capacity of its existing metro network to meet growing passenger demand. The contract has been awarded to AECOM India Private Limited in joint venture with NIPPON KOEI India at a value of Rs 359.7 million (mn). The initiative forms part of the phase one network capacity enhancement project and is intended to ensure that services remain safe, reliable and uninterrupted as ridership increases. The appointment follows standard procurement procedures and aligns with the authority's plans to upgrade capacity in a phased manner.

The consultancy engagement requires the firm to provide project management consultancy services and prepare detailed design documents for civil, track and electrical and mechanical works. It will also include preparation of basic designs for various system packages, compilation of bid documents and assistance during tendering. The scope covers construction supervision, project management and other technical assistance throughout implementation.

The contractors will be responsible for overall planning, coordination, management and monitoring of the project and its multiple components to deliver upgrades to systems, infrastructure and rolling stock. The work is expected to augment line capacity and improve the ability of the network to handle peak passenger volumes without disruption. Measures will focus on optimising train frequency and platform handling to reduce congestion. The programme will seek to strengthen Chennai’s urban transit infrastructure and support the city’s rising public transport demand.

CMRL will oversee the consultancy and coordinate with relevant agencies to streamline approvals and delivery timelines. The appointment of a dedicated project management company is intended to provide specialist oversight and technical guidance during complex upgrade works. The authority will continue to monitor progress and ensure that upgrades align with operational safety and service quality objectives.
