G. Kishan Reddy, Coal Minister, inaugurated several key infrastructure projects and reviewed operations of Western Coalfields Limited (WCL) at a programme in Nagpur. The minister opened new facilities aimed at strengthening production capacity and logistics and undertook a comprehensive review of mining, transportation and safety arrangements. He assessed project readiness and operational planning with senior WCL officials and emphasised the need for timely completion and strict adherence to statutory norms.

During the visit the minister inspected mining works, mechanisation initiatives, pithead infrastructure and rail connectivity plans designed to reduce transit time and handle larger rakes. He examined steps taken to modernise control rooms and deploy digital monitoring for operational efficiency and asset management. The review covered material handling, fuel supply links for thermal stations and efforts to minimise coal handling losses.

The minister stressed that safety and labour welfare must remain central to all expansion and modernisation efforts and directed sustained investment in training, protective equipment and emergency preparedness. He urged the company to strengthen environmental compliance and implement contemporary pollution control measures alongside mine rehabilitation and biodiversity conservation. Attention was also drawn to improving living conditions in mining colonies and enhancing community engagement under corporate social responsibility programmes.

Officials were asked to expedite pending clearances and present actionable roadmaps for capacity enhancement while ensuring uninterrupted coal supply to power and other critical sectors. A system of periodic monitoring and institutional coordination with state authorities was recommended to fast track deliverables and resolve bottlenecks. The visit concluded with a commitment to pursue modernisation, safety and stakeholder collaboration to support energy security and sustainable mining.

Follow up actions will include scheduled reviews and performance tracking by the ministry and corporate management to ensure milestones are met. Emphasis will remain on balancing production objectives with environmental sustainability and community welfare. The ministry indicated that periodic audits and transparent reporting will guide ongoing interventions.
