Delhi Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa and Transport Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh flagged off Green SM's electric taxi service from the Delhi Secretariat on Friday. Sirsa emphasised that the taxis were fully manufactured in India at a plant in Tamil Nadu and described the initiative as a 100 per cent Made in India project. He outlined that the vehicles would feature three cameras monitoring the driver, the road and the passenger and that the scheme prioritised women's safety. The minister indicated that women would be recruited as drivers for the new fleet.

A total of 1,000 electric vehicles and the Green SM app were launched, with plans to expand the fleet to 10,000 vehicles across the Delhi-NCR region within a year. The 100 per cent electric fleet is intended to strengthen the city's clean mobility ecosystem and support government efforts to reduce pollution. Officials noted that the rollout combines vehicle supply and digital booking infrastructure to accelerate adoption.

Earlier, on World Environment Day, Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri launched E85 fuel at an Indian Oil Corporation station in New Delhi and a Toyota Innova flex fuel vehicle capable of operating on E85 was showcased. The minister said the introduction of E85 represented a step towards diversifying the energy mix and promoting cleaner transportation alternatives. He observed that the rollout followed recent introductions of E85-compatible vehicles by major manufacturers, including Hero MotoCorp and Maruti Suzuki.

Puri thanked industry leaders, automobile manufacturers and public sector oil companies for creating the ecosystem required for the launch and highlighted the policy efforts over the past 12 years to improve environmental performance. Officials indicated that coordination between public sector firms and manufacturers would be key to scaling both alternative fuels and electric mobility. The combined initiatives were presented as complementary elements of a broader strategy to reduce emissions and expand cleaner transport options for commuters.
