Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) opened the Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) field training and demonstration centre at Burari plains in Delhi on May six, 2026. The inauguration was led by the Secretary, Department of Defence R&D and Chairman, DRDO Dr Samir V Kamat and the centre is intended to strengthen preparedness for radiological and nuclear exigencies. The facility forms part of the Ministry of Defence initiative to enhance coordinated response capabilities across agencies.

The training and demonstration centre houses dedicated radiological and nuclear test bed facilities and a heavy ion research facility, together with emergency medical response and real time field response units. These installations are designed to provide realistic simulation of CBRN scenarios and to test equipment and protocols under controlled conditions. The centre will also support development of novel detection technologies and operational procedures for first responders.

The centre is being established as a CBRN Centre of Excellence under the Institute of Nuclear Medicine and Allied Sciences (INMAS) and will deliver structured courses and workshops for personnel from the Ministry of Defence, the Ministry of Home Affairs, the National Disaster Management Authority and other agencies involved in CBRN preparedness and crisis response. INMAS will train the next generation of specialists and incorporate the latest techniques and technologies into curricula and field exercises. The programme aims to ensure interoperability and knowledge transfer among civilian and military responder organisations.

The inauguration was attended by senior DRDO leadership and corporate directors, including the Director General Soldier Support System Dr Upendra Kumar Singh, Director General Production Coordination and Services Interaction Dr (Smt) Chandrika Kaushik and Director General Resource and Management Dr Ravindra Singh. Scientists and other dignitaries were present to observe demonstrations and discuss collaborative training plans. The establishment of the centre is expected to enhance national readiness and provide a sustained platform for research, training and interagency coordination.
