Equinix Opens Fourth Mumbai Data Centre With USD 95 mn Investment

Equinix has launched its fourth International Business Exchange (IBX) facility in Mumbai to meet rising demand from artificial intelligence workloads, cloud migration and data localisation norms. MB3 is the company’s first self-built data centre in the city and was developed with an initial investment of over United States dollar (USD) 95 mn.

The facility forms part of Equinix’s India strategy under which the company has committed over United States dollar (USD) 365 mn across Mumbai and Chennai and has linked campuses in the two cities via dedicated dark fibre for national redundancy and traffic optimisation. MB3 is positioned as a node for AI and hybrid multicloud workloads as businesses shift more services to cloud.

Equinix said MB3 is fully covered by renewable energy and aligns with its global goal of achieving 100 per cent renewables coverage by 2030, and the company recently commissioned a 26.4 Megawatt (MW) captive solar project in India to support operations. The renewable coverage is intended to meet customer expectations for sustainable infrastructure as data centre power needs increase with AI adoption. The company’s focus on energy efficiency and on-site generation is part of a wider industry shift.

With more than 300 customers in India, including network providers and enterprises, Equinix’s Mumbai campus already hosts native cloud on-ramps to Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google Cloud, Oracle Cloud and IBM Cloud, positioning MB3 as a key node for hybrid multicloud and AI-led digital transformation work in India. Devendra Fadnavis, Chief Minister of Maharashtra, welcomed the investment and said the facility would strengthen Mumbai’s position as India’s leading data centre hub, which already hosts nearly 60 per cent of the country’s capacity. Cyrus Adaggra, President for Asia-Pacific at Equinix, indicated the opening would enhance the company’s ability to support customers navigating growth driven by cloud adoption and AI innovation.
