Essar Plans $5.8bn Energy Transition Investment in UK by 2035
More than one billion (bn) pounds of the planned outlay are nearing final investment decision to transform Stanlow into a leading energy transition hub, the company has indicated. The project is intended to integrate cleaner fuels production, new feedstocks and conversion technologies to reduce the site emissions profile and increase low-carbon output. The chairman of EETF characterised the programme as generating massive long-term economic value and creating thousands of highly skilled jobs.
Essar is also expanding its UK retail network and aims to supply 800 new locations with its fuels, signalling a broader commercial push to couple refining operations with downstream distribution. The company said it is exploring the development of data centres close to the Stanlow project, reflecting plans to build complementary infrastructure that could benefit from local energy and industrial synergies. The work is planned as part of a phased rollout through to 2035.
The investment pipeline is presented as aligning with the United Kingdom's broader transition to lower-carbon energy and with private sector commitments to infrastructure modernisation. The company framing stresses long-term job creation, regional economic activity and support for industrial decarbonisation at a major refinery complex. Market observers will watch for formal investment decisions as the projects move from planning to execution.
