The Footwear Design & Development Institute (FDDI), an Institution of National Importance under the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), organised its Foundation Day and Industry Conclave 2026, bringing together policymakers, industry leaders, alumni, academicians and students from the footwear, leather and fashion ecosystem.

The event also served as the curtain raiser for FDDI’s upcoming milestone, 40 Years of Excellence, marking the start of year-long commemorative activities celebrating the institute’s journey since its establishment in 1986 and its expanding national and international presence. On the occasion, FDDI unveiled its Vision 2030, centred on innovation-led education, sustainability, entrepreneurship, deeper industry integration and enhanced global competitiveness.

Addressing the gathering, FDDI Managing Director Vivek Sharma said the Foundation Day highlighted both the institute’s evolution and the strong support it continues to receive from DPIIT and industry partners. He noted that Vision 2030 reflects FDDI’s commitment to remaining future-ready and industry-driven while promoting sustainability and Indian heritage. He added that collaboration with stakeholders would remain key to strengthening skills and innovation across the sector.

As part of the celebrations, a talk show featuring FDDI leadership, distinguished alumni and representatives from leading industry bodies explored emerging trends, evolving skill requirements, design and technology integration and the growing importance of industry–academia collaboration. The institute also hosted the prize distribution ceremony for the CBSE National-Level Design Competition organised in partnership with FDDI, recognising student creativity from across India.

An Industry Advisory Roundtable brought together senior executives from footwear, leather and fashion companies to deliberate on workforce development, innovation and global competitiveness. During the session, FDDI launched its Industry Membership Programme to establish structured long-term partnerships and exchanged MoUs with industry bodies to strengthen collaboration in education, research, skilling and technology transfer.

Adding a cultural highlight, FDDI students showcased a fashion presentation themed Traditional Khadi, blending contemporary design with India’s handspun heritage while promoting sustainability and the Vocal for Local ethos.

The Foundation Day and Industry Conclave reaffirmed FDDI’s role as a leading national institute committed to advancing education, innovation and industry partnerships as it approaches its 40th anniversary.
