On July 23, the Modi government's third term unveiled a substantial Rs 2.2 lakh crore initiative aimed at boosting urban housing. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, in her Budget speech, emphasised that this investment will cater to the housing needs of one crore urban poor and middle-class families, part of a larger Rs 10 lakh crore allocation. 

Additionally, the government announced plans to expand the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) by adding provisions for 3 crore more houses. Launched in June 2015, PMAY seeks to provide durable homes with essential amenities to eligible urban beneficiaries, a point underscored by Sitharaman during her budget presentation. 

The Interim Budget earlier this year revised PMAY's allocation to Rs 80,671 crore from the initial estimate of Rs 54,103 crore, crucial for addressing housing shortages in both urban and rural areas and facilitating the completion of 4.21 crore houses over the past decade.
