Full digitisation of GST appeals

A senior official conveyed that the entire process of dispute resolution through appeal to the GST Appellate Tribunal (GSTAT) will be digitised by the Goods and Services Tax Network (GSTN). It was mentioned that a portal is expected to be prepared for this purpose before all the benches of the tribunal become fully operational.

The government plans to activate all the benches of GST Appellate Tribunal (GSTAT) by January 2025, aiming to reduce the substantial backlog of pending GST-related disputes at the appellate level. This information was attributed to a source. It was also mentioned that the principal bench of GSTAT, located in New Delhi, is anticipated to commence operations from July-August.

According to a response provided by the finance ministry to the Parliament, as of June 2023, there were 14,227 appeals against disputed tax demands raised by Central GST authorities pending.
