Gisborne has reopened Rugby Park with the completion of the new John Heikell Grandstand, returning one of East Coast Tair?whiti's most treasured sporting venues to active use after a multiyear redevelopment. The upgraded facility restores a historic home for provincial rugby while creating a modern venue designed to host sporting, cultural and community events for decades. Local and regional officials marked the milestone as a significant boost to community amenity and regional identity.

Rugby Park first opened in 1955 and over time hosted notable touring teams including the Springboks and the British and Irish Lions. Legendary players such as Ian Kirkpatrick, Richard Tiny White and Bob Scott have taken the field there, and the venue has long served as the home of the Poverty Bay Rugby Union. The ground has been a focal point for local rugby and community gatherings across generations.

The original grandstand was closed in 2019 after engineering assessments identified serious seismic weaknesses and deteriorating building materials that made the structure unsafe for public use. The redevelopment delivered a new 900-seat covered grandstand together with upgraded player and media facilities, a modern electronic scoreboard and significant improvements to surrounding infrastructure. The new design provides a safer and more comfortable experience for players, supporters and visitors while meeting the needs of contemporary sporting events.

The redevelopment was funded through a partnership between central government, Trust Tair?whiti and the Lottery Grants Board, with the Government contributing Rs 11.3 mn towards the Rs 12.5 mn project to bring the upgrade to completion. Construction engaged 26 local businesses, keeping work within the region and providing an economic boost during the build phase. The facility is expected to support local jobs, tourism and regional events while offering a versatile site for other sporting competitions, cultural celebrations and major community gatherings that will strengthen Gisborne's appeal to visitors.
