The Government of India has generated Rs 33 billion from the disposal of e-waste and scrap while clearing over 696 million sq. ft. of office space for productive use, Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh announced on the eve of Gandhi Jayanti at the launch of “Special Swachhta Campaign 5.0” in New Delhi.

Dr Singh further highlighted that more than 13.8 million files have been closed or weeded out and 1.2 million cleanliness sites have been identified and cleaned nationwide. He praised the Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances (DARPG) and allied departments for their role in achieving these outcomes.

At Nehru Park, the Minister led Shramdaan activities, launched a plantation drive under the “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” initiative, and participated in weeding out old files. He said these steps symbolise the government’s commitment to sustainability, transparency, and good governance.

Calling the campaign a “unique success story of governance in Independent India,” Dr Singh said the implementation phase beginning 2 October 2025 will institutionalise cleanliness, streamline administrative processes, and improve public services. He credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for turning cleanliness into a people’s movement, now deeply embedded in public consciousness.

In a gesture of recognition, the Minister honoured Safai Mitras by distributing safety kits and sweets, acknowledging their central role in the campaign.

By 1 October 2025, ministries and departments had uploaded targets including 678,698 cleanliness sites, 4,223 references from MPs, 743 parliamentary assurances, 6.9 million public grievances and appeals, and over 3.2 million records for review.

The National Archives of India will also showcase an exhibition, Sushasan aur Abhilekh, on historically valuable records from earlier campaigns, opening on 10 October 2025 at Dr Ambedkar International Centre, New Delhi.

The Special Campaign 5.0 reaffirms the government’s focus on Swachhata, efficiency, transparency, and citizen participation, carrying forward Mahatma Gandhi’s legacy of cleanliness and civic responsibility.
