Hindustan Zinc Reclaims 13 Hectares of Industrial Land with TERI

Hindustan Zinc Limited, India’s leading integrated zinc producer, has achieved a new sustainability milestone by reclaiming 7 hectares of industrial land under Phase 2 of its restoration project with The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI). This brings the total reclaimed area to 13 hectares at the Chanderiya Lead Zinc Smelter in Rajasthan.

The project, which began in August 2024, uses Mycorrhiza technology to convert Jarofix-laden wasteland into dense greenbelts. Following the success of Phase 1, which covered 6.25 hectares and saw 11,000 native plants planted, Phase 2 has added 15,000 saplings over 7 hectares.

The company has also carried out hydroseeding across its Rajasthan units using a mix of native trees and grasses to enhance biodiversity and soil resilience.

Commenting on the initiative, Arun Misra, CEO – Hindustan Zinc, said, “The transformation of legacy industrial land into thriving green ecosystems reflects our commitment to reimagining mining for the future – one that regenerates, not just extracts.”

Hindustan Zinc is also implementing the Miyawaki afforestation method to create high-density, fast-growing forests. So far, 2.4 hectares across Debari, Dariba, and Chanderiya have been greened with over 32,500 native saplings.

Furthering its nature-positive vision, the company has signed an MoU with the Department of Forest, Udaipur to rejuvenate the 400-hectare Baghdarrah crocodile reserve with an investment of Rs 5 crore.

The company’s biodiversity plans are backed by a partnership with IUCN and align with global standards. It is also the first in the sector to release a TNFD report and has committed to planting over 1.5 lakh saplings in 2025.

As part of its ESG strategy, Hindustan Zinc continues to lead in sustainable mining practices, climate-aligned targets through SBTi, and EPD-verified products for reduced environmental impact.
