Hindustan Zinc Sets Rs 50 Billion Capex For FY27

Hindustan Zinc plans Rs 50 billion capex for fiscal 2027, with the company indicating this equates to roughly $500–600 million. The chief executive, Arun Misra, said about 80 per cent of the FY27 capital expenditure will be directed to projects already under way, with the remainder allocated to new initiatives the firm intends to announce soon. The guidance reflects the group’s broader push to expand capacity and modernise operations.

The group’s total project capacity target stands at one million tonnes, of which 250,000 t or 25 per cent has already received approval alongside a capital allocation of Rs 120 billion. Orders for mining works have been placed and construction of a smelter has commenced, while milling and concentrate-related contracts remain to be finalised. These approvals cover mining and mineralisation components of the expansion.

The remaining capacity will require investment on a similar scale to reach 650,000 t, with expenditure expected to be phased over the next four to five years. That trajectory translates to an average annual capex of about Rs 70–80 billion, although only 15–20 per cent of that multi-year outlay is anticipated to materialise as cash outflows in the current year. Misra did not disclose a detailed timeline or a full financial breakdown for the new projects.

Hindustan Zinc, a subsidiary of Vedanta Ltd and backed by the Vedanta Group, is a major producer of zinc, lead and silver and operates across the value chain from ore to metal. The company is listed on the BSE and the NSE and is currently 60.71 per cent owned by Vedanta Ltd, with 27.92 per cent held by the Centre. The firm has been investing to boost capacity, improve efficiencies and deploy digital and mechanised mining and smelting technologies.
