The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) marked another significant milestone with the Keel Laying of the second Fast Patrol Vessel (FPV) and Plate Cutting of the fifth FPV under the 14 FPV Project at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders (MDL), Mumbai. Additionally, the Girder Laying ceremonies for the second and third indigenously built Air Cushion Vehicles (ACVs) were held at Chowgule’s Rassaim Yard, Goa.

The contract for the design and construction of 14 Fast Patrol Vessels, featuring 60 per cent indigenous content, was signed on January 24, 2024. Each FPV will be equipped with indigenously manufactured gearboxes from Triveni, Mysore, and water jets from MJP India. With an approximate displacement of 340 tons, these water-jet propelled vessels are designed for coastal security, search and rescue, and law enforcement operations.

The vessels will integrate state-of-the-art technologies, including AI-based predictive maintenance systems and multipurpose drones, highlighting India’s growing emphasis on advanced and self-reliant maritime defence capabilities.

Similarly, the contract for six Air Cushion Vehicles, signed on October 24, 2024, is based on the proven Griffon Hoverwork (UK) design and includes more than 50% indigenous content. These high-speed, all-weather platforms are capable of patrolling, reconnaissance, interception, interdiction, and search and rescue operations, offering unmatched versatility in shallow waters, marshes, and open seas. Once commissioned, they will serve as force multipliers and enhance the ICG’s agility and responsiveness.

Both the FPVs and ACVs are being developed in alignment with the Government’s ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative, reflecting India’s commitment to self-reliance in defence manufacturing and strengthening maritime security across the Indian Ocean Region (IOR).
