IEX Posts 20.2 Per Cent Rise In August Electricity Volume

The Indian Energy Exchange (IEX) recorded its highest monthly electricity traded volume of 13.938 billion units (bn) in August 2026, representing a growth of 20.2 per cent year-on-year. A total of 0.291 million (mn) Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) were traded during the month, though REC volumes declined 86.6 per cent on a year-on-year basis owing to lower participation. This outcome set a new monthly benchmark for the exchange while highlighting diverging trends between conventional and green market activity.

Government data showed that India’s energy consumption reached 169.01 billion units (bn) in August 2026, registering a year-on-year increase of 12.85 per cent. The higher demand was reflected in intensified buying in the Day-Ahead Market, where buy bids rose 61.7 per cent year-on-year and contributed to higher clearing prices. The average market clearing price in the Day-Ahead Market stood at Rs 4.88 per unit, up 22 per cent year-on-year, while the Real-Time Market recorded an average clearing price of Rs 4.41 per unit, up 30.4 per cent on the same basis.

Within market segments, the Day-Ahead Market including hydro-plant Day-Ahead Market achieved 5.517 billion units (bn) in August 2026 compared with 4.797 billion units in the same month of the prior year, an increase of 15.0 per cent. The Real-Time Electricity Market volume rose to 5.565 billion units in August 2026 from 5.029 billion units in August 2025, a rise of 10.6 per cent. The Day-Ahead Contingency and Term-Ahead Market, which comprises contingency trades and daily, weekly and monthly contracts up to three months, traded 1.765 billion units in August 2026 versus 0.835 billion units a year earlier, an increase of 111.3 per cent.

The IEX Green Market, comprising the Green Day-Ahead and Green Term-Ahead Market segments, achieved 1.091 billion units in August 2026 compared with 0.930 billion units in August 2025, an increase of 17.3 per cent. The weighted average price in the Green Day-Ahead Market for August 2026 was Rs 3.92 per unit, rising 5.1 per cent year-on-year and underlining modest price momentum within green transactions.

REC trading in August 2026 featured sessions on 12 August and 27 August with clearing prices of Rs 370 and Rs 350 per REC respectively, and overall volumes remained subdued. The exchange has scheduled the next REC trading sessions for 09 September 2026 and 30 September 2026 as market participants consider future participation amid price and demand dynamics.
