The Union Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Bhupender Yadav, and the Minister of Climate and the Environment of Finland, Sari Multala, renewed the Memorandum of Understanding on Environmental Cooperation in New Delhi. The renewed memorandum builds on the accord signed in 2020 and aims to deepen bilateral collaboration on pollution prevention and control, waste management, climate change and sustainable use of forests and natural resources. The ministers agreed that the framework will facilitate knowledge and technology cooperation between the two countries.

The MoU establishes a structured framework for exchange of best practices and joint initiatives on prevention and control of air and water pollution, including remediation of contaminated soil, and on hazardous waste management, waste to energy and recycling. It will support cooperation on circular economy measures and low carbon solutions for resource use, with an emphasis on reducing environmental impacts and promoting efficient material cycles. The arrangement also covers climate change mitigation and adaptation and aims to strengthen capacities for integrated water resources management.

The agreement includes collaboration on environmental and forest monitoring and data management to improve policymaking and resource conservation, and it envisages joint work on conservation and sustainable use of marine and coastal resources. Officials from both sides discussed opportunities for focused dialogues and joint initiatives to operationalise the cooperation across research, technology transfer and capacity building. The partnership is intended to support implementation of national priorities while aligning with global environmental goals.

The ministers emphasised the importance of continued dialogue to translate the framework into concrete projects that deliver measurable outcomes for pollution control and resource management. The renewed MoU is expected to provide a long-term basis for cooperation that leverages Finnish expertise and Indian priorities in circular economy and climate action. Both sides expressed commitment to sustain collaboration and monitor progress through regular exchanges.
