India Delivers First High-Speed Ferry To Maldives

India has delivered the first high-speed ferry to the Maldives under the High Impact Community Development Project (HICDP) Phase Three, marking the commencement of a 12 vessel assistance programme. The vessel will operate on routes serving Faafu and Dhaalu Atolls as part of the Raajje Transport Link (RTL) network and is intended to improve inter-island transport. The delivery represents the first of 12 high-speed ferries India has agreed to supply under an existing bilateral arrangement.

India supported construction of the ferry and oversaw final handover procedures with Maldivian authorities, and the vessel is expected to enhance scheduled passenger services between dispersed island communities. The design and speed profile of the craft aim to reduce journey durations and provide a more reliable public transport option for residents of the serviced atolls. The initiative forms a component of HICDP Phase Three efforts to address local connectivity challenges.

The Indian High Commissioner to the Maldives conveyed that New Delhi remains committed to backing infrastructure projects that directly benefit local communities, and officials described the delivery as tangible proof of ongoing cooperation. Under the arrangement, 11 further ferries will be provided to expand the Raajje Transport Link network and strengthen maritime links across the archipelago. Authorities indicated that the programme seeks to complement existing Maldivian transport planning and public service objectives.

Stakeholders said the new ferry is expected to support economic activity by improving access to markets, health services and education while enhancing resilience of transport connections across the atolls. Operational handover will be followed by crew familiarisation and integration of the vessel into regular timetables on the serviced routes. The delivery underscores a pragmatic approach to neighbourhood cooperation focused on transport connectivity and community impact.
