Indian Railways has achieved a historic milestone by producing 1,681 locomotives in FY 2024-25, surpassing both the US and Europe in locomotive manufacturing. This marks a 19% increase from the 1,472 units produced in FY 2023-24, making it the highest-ever annual production in India’s railway history.
The production was led by key manufacturing units:
- Chittaranjan Locomotive Works (CLW): 700 locomotives
- Banaras Locomotive Works (BLW): 477 locomotives
- Patiala Locomotive Works (PLW): 304 locomotives
- Madhepura & Marhowrah (Alstom & GE units): 100 each
The bulk of the production was geared towards freight operations, reinforcing India’s push to enhance its cargo-handling capacity.
Locomotive type-wise production in FY25:
- WAG-9/9H (freight electric): 1,047 units
- WAG-9HH (high horsepower freight): 7 units
- WAG-9 Twin (twin electric freight): 148 units
- WAP-5 (passenger high-speed electric): 2 units
- WAP-7 (passenger electric): 272 units
- NRC (New Rail Coach factory): 5 units
- WAG-12B (12,000 HP freight, Madhepura unit): 100 units
- WDG-4G/6G (GE diesel freight, Marhowrah unit): 100 units
This landmark in locomotive manufacturing reflects Indian Railways’ strategic commitment to modernisation, self-reliance, and infrastructure expansion, with a strong focus on freight efficiency and high-horsepower mobility solutions.
