India's Non-Fossil Capacity Rises 22% to 297.36 GW in June

India's non-fossil fuel-based energy capacity rose 22 per cent to 297.36 gigawatt (GW) in June, reflecting continued additions to the low-carbon power fleet.

The increase underscores the expanding role of non-fossil sources in the country's generation mix and the aggregate capacity has risen year on year.

The term non-fossil fuel-based energy covers renewable sources such as solar and wind as well as hydro and nuclear technologies.

Growth in capacity has been attributable to sustained commissioning of utility-scale projects and distributed generation deployments, and manufacturing of components and deployment of distributed systems have complemented large-scale plant build-outs without altering investment patterns markedly.

Policy measures, competitive auctions and declining technology costs have been cited as enablers of recent additions to capacity and investment flows into clean power projects and associated transmission assets have supported the pace of commissioning.

Operators and planners will continue to assess grid integration and scheduling as variable sources gain a larger footprint, with market participants reported to be focusing on operational readiness and capacity factors as new units enter service.

The rise to 297.36 GW will influence planning for peak demand, reserves and ancillary services as the system adapts.

Further capacity additions and complementary measures such as storage and flexible generation are likely to be focal points for stakeholders, and the transition will require continued coordination between central and state systems to ensure adequate evacuation and scheduling of new capacity.
