J M Baxi Group Enters LPG Shipping With VLGC Purchase

J M Baxi Group has entered the liquefied petroleum gas shipping sector with the acquisition of a Very Large Gas Carrier (VLGC) for USD 87.3 mn. The purchase marks the group's first foray into dedicated LPG vessel ownership and expands its activities in maritime logistics. The transaction completes the procurement of a single VLGC that will be registered under the group's shipping arm.

The group said the acquisition aligns with its strategy to broaden energy logistics services and to integrate upstream and downstream supply chain elements. The vessel purchase was described as a strategic investment to support the carriage of pressurised LPG cargoes on international trade routes. Company representatives indicated the move will complement existing port and terminal services operated by the group.

Very Large Gas Carrier is a vessel class designed for long-haul transport of liquefied gases and is commonly employed on major export lanes. The group noted that owning a VLGC will provide greater control over scheduling and cargo capacity management and will allow optimisation of chartering arrangements. The asset will be deployed in global LPG trades.

Industry analysts said the step signals increasing integration among Indian commodity logistics players, while the group framed the purchase as part of a broader plan to enhance its maritime asset base. The addition of the VLGC is intended to support commercial opportunities arising from growing LPG demand across key consuming regions.

The group will report the acquisition in its next corporate filing and will disclose financing details at that time. The move positions J M Baxi to participate directly in seaborne LPG movements and to offer bundled logistics solutions to customers across the energy value chain.
