Karnataka Eyes USD 150 Billion Electronics Investment

Karnataka is targeting USD 150 billion in investments in mobile and electronic product manufacturing and design over the next decade. The ambition was discussed during a meeting between Industries Minister MB Patil and a delegation led by Pankaj Mohindroo, Chairman of the India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA), to chart a long-term roadmap for sectoral growth.

The Union Ministry of Electronics and IT launched the Electronics Components Manufacturing Scheme in April 2024, offering performance-linked incentives and up to 25 per cent capital subsidy. The Centre has allocated Rs 229 billion for the programme, which prioritises sub-assemblies such as displays, camera modules, bare components and essential manufacturing equipment.

Mohindroo noted that the scheme focuses on deepening India’s component ecosystem through incentives for critical sub-assemblies and manufacturing equipment. He added that Karnataka’s interest in developing a parallel State-level scheme would help accelerate investment flows. Minister Patil said the proposal remains in draft form and welcomed ICEA’s suggestions.

Until November 2024, the Union Government had approved 17 investment proposals worth Rs 71.72 billion under the scheme. These projects are expected to create 11,800 direct jobs and generate products valued at over Rs 650 billion, Mohindroo added.

The meeting was attended by Industries Department Principal Secretary S. Selvakumar, Industries Commissioner Gunjan Krishna and other senior officials.
