Karnataka Seeks Rs 1.5 Trillion for Bengaluru Infra Upgrade

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has sought Rs 1.5 trillion in central funding to tackle Bengaluru’s severe traffic congestion and mounting pressure on its urban infrastructure.
In a proposal letter submitted to the Prime Minister during his visit to the city, Shivakumar requested urgent central support for eight priority projects aimed at easing congestion, modernising public transport, and upgrading essential services.
The projects include:
- Urban tunnels and elevated corridors totalling 77.6 km, including underground links from Hosur Road to Bellary Road (NH-7) and KR Puram to Mysore Road (NH-4 & NH-275), plus an elevated expressway on Kanakapura Road.
- Peripheral Ring Road (PRR): A 73.04 km, eight-lane bypass to divert heavy vehicles from the Outer Ring Road.
- Metro Phase 3 and 3A: Expanding 81.65 km, plus five new corridors totalling 128 km to connect peripheral and satellite towns.
- Double-decker elevated roads along Metro viaducts on the JP Nagar–Hebbal and Hosahalli–Kadabagere stretches.
- Integrated solid waste management plants at four corners of Bengaluru Urban District (100 acres each) with composting, recycling, and waste-to-energy units.
- Roads along stormwater drain buffer zones: 300 km to address encroachments and add capacity.
- Cauvery Water Supply Scheme Phase 6: Adding 500 million litres per day (MLD) by 2028.
- Rapid Rail Transit System: Five corridors linking Bengaluru to Mysuru, Kanakapura, Tumakuru, Chikkaballapur, and Kolar, modelled on the Delhi–Meerut RRTS.
Highlighting Bengaluru’s role as India’s largest IT/ITES hub and a major contributor to the national GDP, Shivakumar stressed that rapid urbanisation has created urgent challenges in mobility, water supply, waste management, drainage, housing, and infrastructure.
