H.D. Kumaraswamy, Union Minister for Heavy Industries, chaired an inter-ministerial meeting with senior officials from the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, and Ministry of Heavy Industries to review progress on electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure under the PM E-Drive scheme. The initiative aims to build a nationwide EV-ready ecosystem to promote cleaner transport and reduce India’s reliance on fossil fuels.

Launched in September last year, the PM E-Drive scheme focuses on accelerating electric vehicle adoption by providing upfront incentives and expanding the charging infrastructure rapidly. With a budget of Rs 109 billion over two years, it supports a wide range of EVs, including electric two-wheelers, three-wheelers, electric buses, and emerging vehicle categories. The scheme also plans the installation of around seventy-two thousand public EV charging stations nationwide.

Kumaraswamy emphasised the commitment to developing a robust, accessible, and future-ready EV ecosystem that ensures energy security, lowers the carbon footprint, and empowers citizens with green transport options. The government aims to establish the foundation for energy security and sustainable economic growth through this scheme.
