The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) said India's first travellator-equipped skywalk at Mahalaxmi is nearing completion and has reached approximately 90 per cent completion, marking a key milestone in the Mahalaxmi Multimodal Connectivity Project. The authority posted the update on its official X account and described the work as bringing the city closer to an integrated interchange. The project is being advanced as part of wider efforts to streamline passenger movement across modes.

The skywalk will connect the Mahalaxmi Suburban Railway Station, Sant Gadge Maharaj Chowk Monorail Station and Metro Line 3, creating a direct pedestrian link between suburban rail, monorail and metro services. Authorities estimate that the interchange will cut transfer times by about 20 minutes and will improve access to the monorail from South Mumbai and Worli. The design aims to reduce crowding and simplify interchanges for daily commuters and occasional travellers.

MMRDA said civic services continued without interruption during construction and that major utilities were preserved. Before foundation work began, the agency relocated a 1,800 mm diameter storm water drain to protect long term drainage, while nearby water supply and sewer pipelines were left undisturbed. Careful sequencing of work and coordination with local agencies helped maintain services and minimise disruption to commuters.

The pedestrian skywalk extends 283 metre and provides an 11 metre clear width to keep movement smooth even during peak hours. The scheme includes six travellators with a combined length of 176 metre and two passenger lifts to ensure accessibility for senior citizens, persons with disabilities and travellers with luggage. The structure has been designed to handle up to 4,500 commuters every hour and is presented as a major step towards an integrated transport ecosystem in Mumbai.
