MIT-WPU Innovates Noise-Reducing Retrofit for Abrasive Saws

Researchers at MIT World Peace University (MIT-WPU) have developed a retrofit enclosure for abrasive saw machines that reduces industrial noise by up to 20 dB(A) while containing sparks, dust, and debris. Developed by Dr Rohit Raghunath Ghadge, Dr Mahesh Vasantrao Kulkarni, and PhD scholar Yash Utsahi Chavande, the compact, machine-mounted enclosure integrates with existing and new machines without requiring major infrastructure changes.

The design combines a rectangular rear section with a curved front profile to redirect sound waves, while transparent windows and adjustable panels maintain visibility and accommodate varied workpieces. Advanced hybrid acoustic materials deliver high sound absorption and transmission loss, improving operator comfort and occupational safety.

This retrofit solution supports cleaner, safer workshops and is suitable across metal fabrication, manufacturing, construction, automotive, railway maintenance, shipbuilding, and engineering sectors. Patent applications have been filed, and prototype testing is underway, with commercial deployment expected for both retrofit and new machine installations.
