The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has been named nodal agency for a state-of-the-art multimodal transport hub (MMTH) within the Rs 20 billion Dharavi Redevelopment Project. A government resolution dated 18 June follows a meeting led by Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.

Planned to knit together metro, suburban rail, BEST buses and non-motorised travel, the MMTH will serve one of Mumbai’s most densely populated districts. MMRDA will work with the Dharavi Redevelopment Authority and all transport bodies to finalise design and phasing. The hub will lie between Central Railway’s Sion station and Western Railway’s Mahim station, easing east–west transfers across the 259-hectare renewal zone.

A second metro stop is also being explored. Alongside the under-construction Metro Line 3 (Colaba–Bandra–Seepz), the Rs 160 billion Metro Line 11 (Wadala–CSMT) may be extended west from Wadala to meet Line 3 at Dharavi, creating a vital interchange between north–south and east–west corridors. Line 11 already proposes stations near Sion and within Dharavi itself.

To accommodate the MMTH, an upgraded BEST depot will be built, allowing the relocation of the existing Dharavi and Kalakilla depots that currently occupy about 12 acres in Sion East. The hub will include bays for feeder buses, wide pedestrian links and dedicated cycle tracks to guarantee full last-mile connectivity. Officials describe the plan as “future-ready mobility, not merely a station”, ensuring Dharavi’s seamless integration with Mumbai’s wider transit grid.
