The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) has modernised the National Sample Survey (NSS) through a range of digital initiatives that aim to improve data collection and processing. Primary data collection for the National Sample Survey is carried out using Computer Assisted Personal Interview (CAPI) systems and web-based applications with in-built validation mechanisms and bilingual interfaces. These digital platforms enable near real-time submission and validation of survey data and allow supervisory officers at multiple levels to monitor the survey process. The adoption of these systems has replaced earlier paper-based workflows and reduced manual handling.

As a result of the digital approach, the time required for processing and dissemination of NSS results has shortened substantially, with the lag in release of annual reports reduced from around eight months earlier to about three months after completion of fieldwork. Where applicable, monthly and quarterly reports are now released within 15 days and 40 days respectively from the end of the corresponding survey period. The systems also support real-time checks that improve data consistency at the stage of collection.

The CAPI and web portals include chatbot-based features in specific exercises such as the Forward-Looking Survey on Private Corporate Sector CAPEX Investment Intentions (CAPEX), the Annual Survey of Industries (ASI) and the Annual Survey of Unincorporated Sector Enterprises (ASUSE) to assist respondents and field officials in resolving queries. Collected data are examined by supervisory officers and monitored through digital dashboards to streamline quality assurance and oversight. MoSPI also publishes an Advance Release Calendar to provide users with tentative schedules for major statistical releases.

MoSPI is further leveraging Artificial Intelligence to enhance accessibility, searchability and usability of reports, datasets and publications released to stakeholders, with AI being integrated into the eSankhyiki portal and an AI-enabled chatbot hosted on the ministry's revamped website to improve data discovery and interaction. No specific timeline has been fixed for full implementation of AI-enabled tools. The minister of state in charge provided this information in the Rajya Sabha, signalling continued efforts to modernise statistical dissemination and user engagement.
