The Neyyattinkara depot of the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation marked its fiftieth anniversary on June 14 with the inauguration of a comprehensive redevelopment project that includes a fully modernised bus station and a revamped station master's office. The project was inaugurated by Transport Minister C P John and was funded through the corporate social responsibility initiative of the Somatheeram group. The upgrade was presented as a major investment in local transit infrastructure aimed at improving passenger experience.

A large gathering of political, social and cultural figures attended the ceremony, which was presided over by Neyyattinkara MLA and former transport minister N Shaktan who highlighted the region's political legacy and its history of producing several influential transport ministers. The transport minister noted that the current depot building dates from 1976 but that public transport services from Neyyattinkara to Kanyakumari began nearly 90 years ago, underscoring the area's long transit tradition. KSRTC chairperson Pramoj Shankar delivered the welcome address.

Situated on the national highway linking Kerala and Tamil Nadu, the depot functions as a key interchange for interstate and local travel and handles 81 daily services, serving over 45,000 passengers each day, largely office goers, school and college students and long distance commuters. Besides KSRTC services, buses from the Tamil Nadu State Road Transport Corporation also use the depot, reflecting its interstate role. The depot operates two dedicated daily services to the popular hill station of Ponmudi and an active budget tourism cell runs affordable tour packages to regional attractions such as Ponmudi, Neyyar Dam and the Kottoor ecotourism centre.

Officials framed the redevelopment as a fusion of historical legacy and modern amenities designed to streamline passenger movement, improve administrative facilities and enhance basic services such as sanitation and accessibility. The intervention is intended to equip the depot to manage current demand and to accommodate future needs, sustaining its role as an indispensable lifeline for thousands of daily travellers. Local authorities indicated that the scheme will preserve the depot's heritage while upgrading functionality for decades to come.
