NHPC has achieved a major construction milestone at the 2000 megawatt (MW) Subansiri Lower hydropower project with the installation of a record 673 tonne (t) rotor. The rotor installation represents the heaviest single component positioned at the project to date and was completed as part of the ongoing mechanical erection schedule. The company reported that the operation involved coordinated efforts across engineering, logistics and safety teams. The installation was carried out under strict safety protocols and regulatory oversight.

The successful placement followed detailed planning and the use of specialised heavy lifting equipment to ensure precision and structural alignment. Engineers completed preparatory works and executed the lift in phases, managing load transfer and stability throughout the operation. The achievement is described as a key step towards system integration and electrical testing. Detailed surveys and finite element analyses supported the execution plan to mitigate risks.

The Subansiri Lower project has an installed capacity of 2000 MW and is expected to contribute significantly to regional and national power availability once the units enter commercial operation. NHPC indicated that completion of major rotating equipment installation will allow sequential commissioning of generating units and grid synchronisation activities. The progress on mechanical milestones has been supported by stringent quality assurance and adherence to environmental and safety protocols.
