The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has begun its first two-week Online Short Term Internship Programme in 2026, inaugurated by the Chairperson, Justice V. Ramasubramanian, in the presence of the Secretary General, Shri Bharat Lal, and senior officers. 80 university-level students from diverse academic backgrounds have been shortlisted from 1,114 applicants across 19 States and Union territories. The programme will run until 13th February 2026 and is intended to familiarise participants with the work of the Commission.

Justice V. Ramasubramanian emphasised that the internship, in line with the Commission's mandate under the Protection of Human Rights Act, aims to propagate human rights discourse and provide college and university students with a comprehensive understanding of the promotion and protection of human rights. He referred to shlokas from ancient Indian scriptures to underline that compassion and forgiveness have long been hallmarks of Indian traditions and customs. He encouraged interns to use the exposure to develop greater empathy before pursuing professional roles.

The Secretary General, Shri Bharat Lal, said that the programme also seeks to sensitise youth to evolve as defenders and ambassadors of human rights and urged the selected interns to absorb the values and knowledge offered by eminent speakers during the programme. He noted that human rights are rooted in real people and lived experiences and urged interns to look beyond statutes and judgements to observe values in action, understand grievances and reflect on how violations occur. The guidance aimed to encourage practical awareness and preventative approaches.

Smt. Saidingpuii Chhakchhuak, Joint Secretary, NHRC, outlined a curriculum that combines lectures with virtual tours of institutions such as Tihar Jail, Shelter Home and Police Station to offer direct insight into the realities of human rights. She informed interns of activities and competitions designed to enhance understanding and build confidence. Lt. Col. Virender Singh, Director, NHRC, and staff of the Training Division were present at the inaugural session, which seeks to bridge academic study and lived practice through experiential learning.
