The Odisha government has announced plans to scale its electric bus fleet to over 1,000 vehicles in the coming years, as it strengthens its commitment to sustainable urban transport. With 450 e-buses currently in operation, the state ranks fifth nationally in green mobility adoption, according to official data released on Friday.

Across India, 14,329 e-buses are presently in use. Delhi leads with 3,564, followed by Maharashtra (3,296), Karnataka (2,236), and Uttar Pradesh (850). Odisha’s tally of 450 places it ahead of neighbouring states like West Bengal (391), Andhra Pradesh (238), Chhattisgarh (215), and Jharkhand (46).

Odisha’s progress in e-mobility has been driven by active participation in central government schemes offering financial assistance for electric bus deployment. The Capital Region Urban Transport (CRUT) authority has played a key role, currently operating services in Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, and Puri, and planning expansions to Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, Keonjhar, Berhampur, and Angul.

To support this growth, the state is investing in essential infrastructure. Charging stations are being established at depots and terminals, while digital ticketing innovations—such as QR-based payments, the National Common Mobility Card (NCMC), and app-enabled bookings—are being implemented to enhance commuter convenience.

Housing and Urban Development Minister Krushna Chandra Mahapatra said, “Odisha’s rapid strides in e-mobility reflect our commitment to both the environment and the people. The expansion of e-buses is not just about technology—it is about providing dignified, affordable, and eco-friendly travel to every citizen.”
