Patna Municipal Corporation Steps Up Ganga Ghat Cleaning

The Patna Municipal Corporation (PMC) has intensified cleaning operations at major Ganga ghats as the river’s water level continues to fall in the city. Municipal Commissioner Yashpal Meena has directed teams to conduct deep cleaning across the Ganga wards, with work being carried out in phases according to conditions at individual locations.

The campaign covers JP Setu, Pati Pul, Minar Ghat, Collectorate Ghat, Mangal Talab, Bhadr Ghat, Nauzar Ghat and Damarahi, among other sites. Sanitation workers are manually removing accumulated waste and clearing the surrounding areas to improve cleanliness and access.

Workers at Digha cremation ghat, Patthar Ghat and other locations are also removing silt and soil deposited after the river receded. PMC is conducting the operations in two shifts each day, with an average of two to three sanitation workers deployed at each ghat. Additional personnel and equipment are being assigned based on the volume of work and local requirements.

Around 3 t of waste and silt were removed from various ghats during the special cleaning drive on Tuesday. The collected material is being lifted and disposed of according to prescribed procedures. PMC teams are also carrying out fogging and anti-larval spraying at the ghats and nearby areas to limit mosquito breeding where stagnant water may remain.

Municipal teams are inspecting sensitive areas for waterlogging, waste and silt. Near Patthar Ghat, the civic body is coordinating with the Bihar Urban Infrastructure Development Corporation (BUIDCO) to install pumps for draining water that accumulates on roads and low-lying areas towards the southern side when river levels rise. Cleaning will continue after the water is removed, while the wider campaign has been accelerated ahead of the festival season to maintain safer and better-managed ghats for residents and devotees.
