Patna will receive Regional Rapid Transit System connectivity linking the city with Muzaffarpur, Begusarai, Arrah and Gaya, covering four corridors that radiate north, east, west and south from the capital. Bihar’s chief minister approved Rs 315.9 million (mn) for preparation of an Alternative Analysis Report and a Detailed Project Report for the state RRTS project at a cabinet meeting on July 8. The allocation is intended to fund feasibility studies and preliminary design work. The National Capital Region Transport Corporation has been nominated to undertake the reports.

NCRTC will assess the technical, financial and environmental feasibility of the proposed corridors and produce comprehensive documentation required for subsequent approvals. The agency will adapt learnings from the Namo Bharat model in the Delhi national capital region, where the Delhi-Meerut RRTS operates as India’s first semi-high speed corridor with speeds up to 180 kmph and has reduced travel times between its cities. Officials indicated the study will map route options, ridership projections and implementation phasing.

The proposed network is intended to strengthen regional connectivity within Bihar by providing a semi high-speed public transport alternative that connects major urban and economic centres to the capital. The four corridors are described as Patna to Muzaffarpur in the north, Patna to Begusarai in the east, Patna to Arrah in the west and Patna to Gaya in the south, and are expected to shorten journey durations for commuters and freight movements. Planners expect the corridors to support urban development and ease pressure on existing road networks.

State authorities presented the decision as a strategic measure to foster modern, safe and faster public transport and to catalyse economic growth across the region. NCRTC’s work on the AAR and the DPR will determine alignment choices, cost estimates and implementation timelines before final approvals are sought. The project will proceed through detailed studies and stakeholder consultations prior to any construction activity.
