PTC Industries Limited has secured a prestigious order from the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, a key facility of the Indian Space Research Organisation. The order involves converting 40 tonnes of Grade 1 titanium sponge into Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy ingots using the Double Vacuum Arc Remelting (Double VAR) process, meeting the stringent quality and purity standards required for space and aerospace applications.

Vacuum Arc Remelting is a critical secondary melting process used to produce aerospace-grade titanium alloys, enabling precise control over chemistry, solidification and cleanliness under high vacuum conditions. The Double VAR process, in which the alloy is remelted twice, delivers exceptionally high chemical homogeneity, superior metallurgical cleanliness and enhanced fatigue strength and fracture toughness, while ensuring compliance with demanding space and aero-engine material standards. The use of Grade 1 titanium sponge as the starting material further ensures very low interstitial content, a key requirement for space-grade alloys.
