Following successful trials, Indian Railways has decided to install CCTV cameras across all passenger coaches and locomotives to enhance safety and deter crime. The cameras will be installed in common movement areas near coach doors to ensure privacy while improving surveillance.

Union Railway Minister Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw and Minister of State Shri Ravneet Singh Bittu reviewed the initiative during a meeting on 12 July 2025, attended by senior Railway Board officials. The review noted that trials in Northern Railway coaches and locomotives had delivered positive results.

The rollout will cover 74,000 coaches and 15,000 locomotives. Each coach will be equipped with four dome-type cameras—two at each entrance—and each locomotive will feature six cameras, including one at the front, rear, and on each side. Additionally, both cabs of a locomotive will have one dome camera and two desk-mounted microphones.

The surveillance system will employ state-of-the-art, STQC-certified equipment. The Railway Minister directed officials to ensure high-quality video recording, even in low light and at speeds above 100 kmph. He also encouraged the use of artificial intelligence to analyse the footage, in partnership with the IndiaAI mission.

The measure is part of Indian Railways' broader effort to create a secure and modern travel experience. Officials highlighted that while the cameras will improve passenger protection by identifying miscreants and deterring organised crime, passenger privacy remains a key concern and will be safeguarded throughout the process.
