Rockwool to Establish Largest Insulation Factory in India

Denmark-based Rockwool, a leading global insulation producer, announced plans to establish its largest factory in India at Cheyyar in Tiruvannamalai district, Tamil Nadu. The new facility, which represents an investment of Rs 550 crore, is expected to significantly increase the company?s production capacity and market presence in India.

The factory, set to begin operations in the first half of 2026, will be located at the State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu (SIPCOT) Industrial Park in Cheyyar, about 90 km from Chennai. This new site will be Rockwool's second in India, following its existing facility in Dahej, Gujarat, which began operations in 2011.

"We are setting up our second factory in Cheyyar SIPCOT Industrial Park with an investment of Euro 55 million (Rs 550 crore). Our decision to expand in Tamil Nadu aligns with the state's leadership in various sectors and its significant contribution to India's GDP," said Darryl Mathews, Rockwool's Asia Managing Director.

The new plant will be 25% larger than the current facility in Gujarat and will produce approximately 50,000 tonnes of non-combustible, recyclable, and long-lasting stone wool insulation materials. The expansion will create about 150 jobs and is aimed at enhancing Rockwool's capabilities to serve the growing domestic demand for insulation, including products used in fire protection applications.

Rockwool Board Chairman Thomas Kahler, Asia Managing Director Darryl Mathews, and India Business Unit Director Vinay Pratap Singh discussed the project with Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary N Muruganandham at the secretariat on Thursday.

Mathews noted that the new factory would significantly boost Rockwool's revenue contribution from India to its global operations, which currently stands below single digits. "We expect a significant increase in revenue from the Indian market with the commencement of our second factory," he said.

The facility in Tamil Nadu is designed to serve the domestic market exclusively, while the Gujarat factory will continue to meet about 90% of local demand.

With a presence in 40 countries and reported revenues of Euro 3.6 billion, Rockwool's expansion in India underscores its commitment to growing its footprint in the region and contributing to the local economy through advanced manufacturing and sustainable practices.
