RPF Uses AI, Drones to Evict Encroachers, Launches 'Mission 250+'

The Railway Protection Force (RPF) of Northeast Frontier Railway has taken a significant step towards safeguarding railway land from illegal activities by incorporating AI-powered technology. As part of this initiative, 45 drone cameras have been deployed for enhanced surveillance, with AI-based software under development to detect unauthorised structures like huts, houses, and buildings during aerial surveys.

In the first phase of this project, RPF successfully removed 210 railway quarters from illegal occupants between February and March 2025. The team also dismantled 27 unauthorised soft structures, 4 shops, and several kutcha structures. This operation was carried out in coordination with engineering and electrical staff, as well as local police.

Following these successes, the next phase, “Mission 250+”, aims to evict over 250 unauthorised occupants from New Guwahati Railway Colony. Plans for the vacated quarters include merging two smaller units into more spacious ones, installing fencing for added security, and improving the area’s aesthetics with walking tracks and parks to encourage staff occupancy.

CPRO Kapinjal Kishore Sharma shared the update in a press release on Friday.
