Rs 900 bn Railway Investment to Boost Odisha Infrastructure

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted the rapid transformation of railway infrastructure in Odisha, emphasising connectivity and capacity enhancement as projects worth Rs 900 bn are underway. The minister said the investment represents an unprecedented expansion of the rail network and will support passenger and freight movement. The announcement underlined a push to upgrade infrastructure and improve operational efficiency.

During a visit to Odisha he inspected the ongoing redevelopment of Bhubaneswar Railway Station and urged timely completion and high quality execution to secure long term benefits. He indicated that the upgraded station will deliver enhanced passenger comfort through modern amenities and improved facilities in line with Indian Railways' objective of converting stations into world class hubs. Officials expect these improvements to raise service standards for commuters and visitors.

The minister noted that Odisha has received a record railway budget allocation of Rs 109.28 bn, a sum he said will accelerate project delivery across the state. He said increased funding will facilitate faster completion of key works and reduce bottlenecks that have affected timelines. Vaishnaw also highlighted that 59 railway stations are being redeveloped under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme to create more passenger friendly hubs.

On connectivity he said all 30 districts of Odisha will be connected by rail through planned initiatives designed to promote inclusive development and integrate remote regions with the core network. Major plans include a proposed four-line coastal rail corridor from Balasore to Berhampur intended to enhance capacity along the coast, improve regional mobility and relieve congestion. These measures are framed to stimulate economic activity and support logistics efficiency in the corridor.

He concluded that the cumulative effect of these projects will be stronger regional connectivity and greater integration with national freight and passenger networks, supporting sustained economic growth. The ongoing investments and policy focus are expected to position Odisha as a key beneficiary of India's expanding railway infrastructure. Officials will monitor execution speed and quality to ensure the anticipated benefits materialise.
