Sanjay Garg Takes Charge as BIS Director General

Sanjay Garg, a senior civil servant from the 1994 IAS batch (Kerala cadre), has taken charge as the Director General of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), India’s National Standards Body, with effect from 1 November 2025.

Garg brings with him over three decades of diverse administrative experience, covering strategic planning, policy formulation, and implementation across multiple sectors — including agriculture, food logistics, industrial development, defence manufacturing, finance, and various social initiatives at both the State and National levels.

Before joining BIS, Garg served as Additional Secretary in the Department of Agriculture, Research and Education (DARE) and as Secretary, Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). During his tenure, he led the digital transformation of agricultural research management and administration through the application of IT solutions. He also played a key role in expanding the Kisan Sarathi portal, which directly connects farmers with agricultural scientists, enhancing access to real-time expertise and knowledge.

His previous roles include managing World Bank–funded projects in India, overseeing policy reforms and deregulation in the defence industry sector, and driving industrial promotion initiatives, including the development of the leather industry.

As Director General of BIS, Garg will also serve as President of India’s National Committee in the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), representing India in the formulation of global standards.

With his extensive background in governance, reform, and digital transformation, Garg is expected to strengthen BIS’s role in enhancing the quality ecosystem, promoting innovation-driven standardisation, and aligning India’s standards framework with global benchmarks.
