Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Monday to brief him on the State’s progress across socio-economic indicators and near-complete coverage of welfare schemes. Sarma conveyed Assam’s readiness to welcome the Prime Minister on 8 September, a visit set to mark key developmental milestones.

During the meeting, Sarma presented Modi with a traditional Assamese gamosa and mementoes. The PM is scheduled to inaugurate the year-long centenary celebrations of Bharat Ratna Dr Bhupen Hazarika and dedicate India’s first bio-ethanol plant at Numaligarh in Assam’s Golaghat district.

The Chief Minister also called on Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and invited her to lay the foundation stone for the upcoming Kanaklata Barua University in Gohpur. He noted the university will be among India’s first institutions with an industry-oriented academic approach, offering programmes in emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and robotics.

Additionally, Sarma met Union Minister for Coal and Mines, G. Kishan Reddy, to discuss revitalising Coal India’s operations in Margherita, Tinsukia district. He expressed gratitude for the minister’s support in strengthening coal sector productivity in the region.
