The Secunderabad Cantonment Board (SCB) has approved the transfer of 33 acres of land to the Telangana government, aiming to facilitate road widening and alleviate traffic congestion in Secunderabad, Hyderabad's twin city. 

During a special meeting, the SCB passed a resolution endorsing the handover of land for the expansion of roads spanning from Paradise Circle to Suchitra Circle and Gymkhana Grounds to Hakimpet Air Force Station. These developments are expected to address traffic issues in the Bowenpally and Tirumalagiri areas.

However, the completion of road expansion, as well as proposed skyways and Metro corridors, hinges on the transfer of 157 acres of land from various defence units to the state government. The identification of suitable land was conducted jointly by the Defense Estate Officer (DEO), Secunderabad Circle, and the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA).

While the SCB agreed to relinquish management of the 33-acre portion, the respective departments will make decisions regarding the remaining 124 acres. The defence lands encompass various categories, including Army lands and leased property.

The state government has requested the Defense Ministry to cede the lands to enable the execution of skyway and other projects aimed at easing traffic congestion. The strategic road development proposal (SRDP) was first introduced in 2017. Telangana's Minister for Municipal Administration and Urban Development, K.T. Rama Rao, engaged with Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, urging the transfer of defence lands for these initiatives. 

KTR expressed that the state government would offer alternative lands of equivalent value if the defence ministry granted 96 acres for the Jubilee Bus Stand-Rajiv Rahadari skyway and 56 acres for the Paradise Circle-Medchal ORR skyway. The state also sought defence land for a road connecting Golconda and Ibrahim Bagh. The State Cabinet approved an expansive Hyderabad Metro expansion plan, incorporating double elevated Metro corridors to enhance public transportation and accommodate both motor vehicles and Metro trains.
