Shyam Metalics Commissions Phase I of Rs 6,030 Mn Cold Rolling Mill in West Bengal

Shyam Metalics and Energy Ltd (SMEL), one of India’s leading integrated metal producers, has commenced operations at its new greenfield Cold Rolling Mill (CRM) in Jamuria, West Bengal. The Phase I facility marks a significant milestone in the company’s expansion strategy and is set to strengthen its presence in both domestic and international steel markets.
The project, executed under Shyam Metalics Flat Products Pvt Ltd, a wholly owned step-down subsidiary, began trial runs on 9 September 2024. With a total capacity of 400,000 tonnes per annum and an overall investment of Rs 6,030 million (Rs 3,460 million invested and Rs 2,570 million pending), the new CRM will manufacture pre-painted galvalume (PPGL) and galvanized iron/steel (GI/GL) coils.
Commenting on the development, Brij Bhushan Aggarwal, Vice Chairman and Managing Director, Shyam Metalics and Energy Ltd, said, “Our foray into cold rolling mills underscores our dedication to innovation, sustainability, and India’s growth story. This expansion will enhance our value-added product portfolio and contribute 8–10 per cent to the company’s revenue and EBITDA in the coming years.”
Strategically located in eastern India, the Jamuria facility offers logistical advantages and addresses the region’s limited colour-coated sheet manufacturing capacity. The expansion aligns with national industrial and housing development initiatives, including PMAY (Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana), by supplying high-quality steel for housing, warehousing, and industrial structures.
The new cold rolling mill reinforces Shyam Metalics’ commitment to sustainable manufacturing and renewable energy initiatives, supporting India’s transition toward greener industrial growth and further consolidating the company’s position as a leading player in the steel sector.
