Siemens has secured an order to electrify the Rishikesh-Karnaprayag railway line, the company said. The contract is valued at Rs 2,630 million (mn) and covers comprehensive electrification works along the mountain route. The award aligns with broader efforts to upgrade rail infrastructure in Uttarakhand and to strengthen connectivity to pilgrimage and regional centres. Company representatives framed the project as a strategic assignment that will support increased service frequency and enhance operational resilience.

The electrification will replace diesel traction on the route and is expected to improve energy efficiency and reliability of services. Work will involve installation of overhead equipment, power supply systems and associated infrastructure to enable electric traction. Project management will require coordination with track and signalling teams and adherence to safety and quality protocols. The contract scope also contemplates testing, commissioning and training of local personnel for ongoing operations and maintenance.

Siemens indicated it will leverage its experience in rail electrification in India and abroad to execute the work, deploying specialised teams and engineering solutions. The firm signalled plans to work closely with Indian Railways and local contractors to ensure supply chain readiness and timely delivery of equipment. Environmental considerations will guide implementation in the sensitive Himalayan terrain and measures will be taken to minimise disruption during construction. Authorities anticipate that coordinated stakeholder engagement will be carried out throughout the project lifecycle.

Stakeholders noted that the project could generate employment opportunities during construction phases and provide longer term benefits through improved regional mobility. Electrification is likely to reduce operating costs for services on the line and to enable more efficient timetable planning and asset utilisation.
