Sonowal Pays Tribute at Bhupen Hazarika’s Guwahati Home

Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, visited the iconic residence of legendary music maestro Dr Bhupen Hazarika in Guwahati to pay tribute to the Bard of Brahmaputra. The emotional visit included interactions with family members and a guided tour of the house, now preserved as a living memorial to Hazarika’s life and legacy.
Mr Sonowal was welcomed by Samar Hazarika, the younger brother of the late singer, and other members of the family. They led him through rooms filled with personal artefacts, musical instruments, books, and photographs that chronicle Dr Hazarika’s journey as a singer, poet, composer, and humanitarian.
Addressing the media, the minister said, “Bhupen da’s body of work remains a source of pride and hope for Assam. His songs continue to resonate with the values of unity, compassion, and humanity — ideals cherished by every Assamese.”
He emphasised the importance of ensuring that Dr Hazarika’s timeless legacy reaches the younger generation, adding, “His music can still inspire youth to embrace harmony, humanity, and cultural pride. Art, as Bhupen da showed, is a powerful instrument of transformation.”
The minister also announced that the Government of Assam is planning year-long centenary celebrations to commemorate Dr Hazarika’s birth anniversary. He shared that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to participate, underscoring the national and global significance of Dr Hazarika’s contributions.
Mr Sonowal concluded by noting that “Bhupen da’s music has the power to unite Assamese society as a cultural force. His home, now a place of reverence and reflection, offers an intimate glimpse into the spirit and achievements of a truly extraordinary life.”
