Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles (TMPV), a subsidiary of Tata Motors, has officially re-entered the South African passenger vehicle market in partnership with Motus Holdings, the country’s leading automotive group. The launch in Johannesburg introduced four models—Harrier, Curvv, Punch, and Tiago—marking a significant step in Tata’s global expansion strategy.
The comeback reflects Tata’s rising global ambitions and follows strong growth at home, where TMPV sales surged from 170,000 units in 2020 to more than 560,000 in 2025, representing a 350 per cent increase. All Tata passenger models carry 4- or 5-star safety ratings under Global NCAP and Bharat NCAP, reinforcing the brand’s focus on safety.
Shailesh Chandra, Managing Director of TMPV and Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Ltd., said:
“Our return to South Africa marks a milestone in Tata Motors’ global journey. We are excited to bring our new-generation vehicles—engineered with cutting-edge technology, uncompromising safety, and modern design—to a market that values quality and innovation. With Motus as our partner, we are confident of delivering a superior ownership experience while contributing to the local economy.”
Ockert Janse Van Rensburg, Group CEO of Motus Holdings, added:
“We are proud to partner with Tata Motors in reintroducing their acclaimed passenger vehicle range to South Africa. Combining Tata’s engineering and innovation with our distribution and aftersales expertise, we will offer customers a compelling value proposition and help shape the future of mobility in South Africa.”
TMPV will begin operations through a 40-dealer network, which will expand to 60 outlets by 2026. Alongside sales and aftersales support, Tata will invest in skills training, job creation, and financial partnerships to make vehicle ownership more accessible.
Model Line-Up:
- Harrier: Full-sized SUV with 2.0-litre Kryotec turbocharged engine, Level 2 ADAS, and advanced infotainment.
- Curvv: Coupe-inspired SUV with a 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine and tech-rich interiors.
- Punch: Compact SUV featuring a 1.2-litre petrol engine, 90-degree opening doors, and safety-first engineering.
- Tiago: Practical hatchback powered by a 1.2-litre Revotron petrol engine, designed for everyday usability.
Looking ahead, TMPV plans to introduce alternative energy powertrains in South Africa, aligning with Tata’s global shift toward sustainable mobility. With Motus’ distribution strength and Tata’s innovation-led portfolio, the re-entry positions TMPV as a strong contender in South Africa’s expanding passenger vehicle market.
